After two hours. I think Microsoft is saying, “Screw you!” to everyone who passed on the free Windows 10 upgrade.

there’s a particular point after installing service pack 1 where Windows Update will fuck off and sit there all day with the CPU pegged.

They are saying FU. Windows 7 update servers really get the shit end of the stick. And they are doing it just to screw Windows 7 customers into upgrading to 10.

Do we know this for a fact, or are we merely supposing?
For the record, I attempted to update to Windows 10 and their upgrade croaked and I had to re-image...

Yeah, and they can go pound sand. Windows 7 is the last Microsoft product I’m using/purchasing for my personal computers. After this whole Windows 10 asshattery, I’m done.

I have heard this from a “Microsoft Partner” we work with who has listened to many many clients complain about the same issue and Microsoft has ‘no acceptable answer’ for him. It’s been going on for months.

Unofficially, there IS a SP2 for Windows 7 if you actually still do a lot of installs from scratch. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/31255…

Can you set up a local server for WSUS? It saves a lot of headache.

It does have the biggest community support and I have it on a couple of my machines but for my servers I run centOS (as that’s what we use at work). The only Windows machine I have is my gaming rig, and that’s because OpenGL never got their shit together so DirectX is the standard. If we could get game developers to support another standard that’s not microsoft, I’d burn my windows 7 cd and piss on the ashes.

For what is worth, I just love the pictures they give you to look at. I just don’t care enough that they are limiting certain things. Win 10 is a great platform, that composes the best of Win 7/8.1, with some drawbacks, like mandatory updates(and some are not even that mandatory) and the more closed ecosystem.
But then a closed ecosystem is something that we have been served the last 15 years in almost any successful product.

Are you in a domain, or just managing a lot of home computers? It’s more of a job for a domain controller.

It also says, though my screen shot is too small to show it, that I now need 68 important updates. (I’m irritated right now... Sorry if I sound grumpy.)

I need to use things like Adobe Creative Suite. I’m sort of stuck with Windows. I might have tried harder to upgrade to Windows 10 if I knew they were going to try and SCREW all of us like this. It’ll get messy enough that in a year or several, the politicians will get on their case.

Well Mantle should have fixed things, but then AMD found out that they can do DX12 really well and aborted.
The problem is that, there is such a small market for anything else than MS, that at this stage, there is no point in doing new things.
For a industry that is shifting by the day, MS has become a constant, something that you just can’t beat.

Not on a domain. But I configure enough computers at the house that it would be worth my effort to set this up.

Indeed it might. My trouble is that the tasks I do I have to do in a hurry and I don’t have much time for a learning curve.

Hmm. I’m not sure if you can do it without being part of a domain. Here’s some randomly found discussion about it that doesn’t sound too hopeful, but you might be able to look into BITS caching. I think that’s what they are doing in Windows 10 to share downloaded updates.

I don’t think so, I’m pretty sure you can only enable WSUS with Windows Server.

stop download, close the software update window, then go back to it and start again. There’s a bug that happens sometimes where the updater doesn’t correctly notify that updates have been downloaded and are ready to install.

Well Microsoft has been found to intentionally gimp Google Chrome because everyone likes it more than IE, so I wouldn’t put it past them.

Do what I do, multiple OS on one HDD!! I have Linux Mint to do testing and development on my Android devices (20 GB on my HDD), Windows 10 for web browsing and certain programs (80 GB on my HDD), and Windows 7 for gaming and pretty much everything else (380 GB).

I really like the design of 10, going back to 7 is like jumping back 10 years. I have only had minor issues so far but the experience overall has been great, and I like using Edge too although it is frustrating to use with kinja for some reason. And Bing still sucks.

I’d be curious to try that, or even to have a separate box(es), but I don’t have time to learn how to install and use another OS.

Windows for web browsing?
When I have the time to install these new PC parts, I’m going to wipe my drive and use some flavor of Linux for everything except games.

Pretty much. I like Window 10's UI, so I use it for most Internet activities (torrenting, blogging, Android/Mac projects) then use Windows 7 and Android for anything hardware intensive. For the majority of programs I run, Windows 10 is a mess, so I don’t use it for anything tasking.
